I honestly love Mara Jade for being such a complex and multifaceted character. She also undergoes significant character development throughout the Expanded Universe novels. She began her life as an Emperor’s Hand, serving as the personal assassin and operative for Emperor Palpatine himself. Her training in the ways of the Force, as well as espionage, combat, and infiltration, makes her such a formidable agent.
After the Emperor’s death and the fall of the Empire in “Return of the Jedi,” Jade’s life takes a dramatic turn. Because of this, she initially holds a deep-seated hatred for Luke Skywalker, as she was conditioned to eliminate him if Palpatine died. However, she gradually transitions from an enemy of the New Republic to a complex anti-heroine. We watch as she eventually becomes a Jedi Knight under Luke Skywalker’s tutelage and plays a vital role in fighting against the remnants of the Empire and various other threats to the galaxy. As such, we can never forget her fiery red hair, mastery of the Force, and different combat skills!
